The preview for our April 20th English, Continental and American Exposition auction opens this weekend. The sale includes beautifully upholstered seating, timeless mahogany and rustic painted furniture, extensive collections of porcelain dinner services and stemware, and a variety of engravings, watercolors and paintings to suit almost any décor.

Deep-Buttoned Chaise Longue

Lot #125 in Stair Galleries’ upcoming auction was designed by Mark Hampton circa 1989: a Victorian-style deep-buttoned chaise lounge. It’s simultaneously functional, comfy, and chic. Dimensions: 6 ft. x 31 in. x 36 in. Estimate: $ 500–$700.

Stair Galleries will be offering two exciting collections of 20th century photography from two corporate collections in our upcoming April 30th-May 1st auction. Several highlights from these collections include pieces by Michael Kenna, Paul Strand, Mitch Epstein, Aaron Siskind and local
photographer, Lynn Davis. Also being offered is fine art and a large collection of modern prints from 20th century masters; art to include works by David Hockney, Richard Hamilton, Alexander Calder, Sam Francis, Robert Motherwell, and Ellsworth Kelly (shown above).

Louis XV-Style Bureau Plat

Featured in Stair Galleries’ April 1st sale, this Louis XV-Style gilt-bronze mounted, cream-painted bureau plat includes an inset leather top. This lovely lady’s writing table is beautifully executed emphasizing the rococo lines of the Louis XV period with the serpentine outline of the top and the cabriole legs. It is inset with a gilt-tooled leather top and fitted with gilt-bronze mounts. This exact model was in Babe Paley’s sitting room, designed by Albert Hadley.

Pair of ‘Barcelona’ Chairs

Created by architect Ludwig Mies van der Rohe for the German Pavilion at the 1929 Barcelona International Exhibition, the chromed-steel and leather ‘Barcelona’ chair quickly became an icon of 20th-century design. Knoll International of New York City adopted the design in the 1950’s and continues to manufacture this classic chair with its elegant profile and x-shaped base derived from the ancient Roman curule. Stair Galleries’ February 25, 2011 Modernism Sale will include a pair of labeled Knoll Barcelona chairs with buttoned and pleated brown leather cushions. Estimate: $800–$1,200. George III Partner’s Desk

This fine Georgian partner’s desk features a green leather-inset top with gilt-stamped border and rests on two pedestals, each fitted on one side with three drawers and on the other with a cupboard. The heavy brass pulls and beading on the drawers enhance the elegance of this piece. Dimensions: 31 1/4 in. x 5 ft. 2 in. x 30 1/4 in. Provenance: Ex-Collection of Robertson and Mary Paige Alford, Norfolk, CT. Estimate: $2,000 - $4,000. Zuber & Cie Wallpaper Panels

Stair Galleries is pleased to offer a set of panels from Zuber et Cie’s scenic wallpaper, “El Dorado,” an exotic panoramic view with Egyptian ruins, Moorish villas and Islamic mosques surrounded by lush vegetation. The wallpaper manufactory of Zuber, established in Rixheim, France, in 1797, introduced the scenic in 1849 and continues to produce this popular design using traditional block-printing methods. Thirty-five full panels, partial panels and strips, each with canvas backing. Note: The panels vary in height as well as in width; largest panels 75 to 75 1/2 in. x 21 1/8 un. The estimate for this lot is $800 - $1200.
