A highlight from our upcoming auction:  Marie-Claude de Fouquières'  Resin Dining Table, circa 1970.  ( Lot  37.)

Dissatisfied with contemporary furnishings of the 1960’s, Marie-Claude de Fouquières, the wife of an industrial plastics producer, began experimenting with polyester resins. The result of this effort was the resin dining table, which one year later was exhibited at the La Cloche Gallery in Paris. The showing was an instant success and custom orders came pouring in. To meet  demand she conceived various other objects to compliment her tables, such as lamps, large panels, and even an entire bathroom.

The exposure from the La Cloche  Gallery brought her the opportunity to work with other known designers and architects such as Lionel Morgaine, David Hicks, Albert Pinto, and Maison  Jansen for whom she created exclusive models. One of her more notable private clients was the Emirate of Qatar. Her entourage of artistic friends urged her to utilize elements such as grass, candy, and corks among other things, creating whimsical designs into the resin slabs. During one of her experiments she tried promotional product placement as she had planned to embed Dior
make-up in a specially designed table.

A resurgence of interest began  when the home of antiquaire Yves Gastou was illustrated in the October 2008 issue of the French Edition of Architectural Digest. It was a home filled with eclectic furnishings which included a resin dining table by Marie-Claude surrounded by a set of Louis XVI fauteuils, an Arbus glass chandelier, and a pair of metal Poillerat torchères.

During the 1970’s, Marie-Claude de Fouquières’ high end, one-of-a-kind designs became renowned for their distinctive colors and textures. She built a career of creating stylish pieces, sought after by clients ranging from royalty to top designers.
