EBB & FLOW
On view 4/25 – 6/10
Opening Reception: Saturday, April 28th, 5-7pm
Shawn Snow, I Saw the Star, 2017, oil and alkyd on canvas, 48 x 36 inches
Allyson Levy, Cacophony 2, 2017, butterfly wings and encaustic on panel, 12 x 12 inches
Anne Francey, Configurations #4, 2017, raku fired ceramic, 18 x 18 inches
“Ebb & Flow”, a collection of abstract works by Shawn Snow, Anne Francey, Allyson Levy, Ragellah Rourke, Bruce Murphy, Vince Vella, and Gary Buckendorf embodies forces of motion, change, and time we embrace with each passing season. After a long winter in the Hudson Valley, this exhibit comes in time to celebrate the swelling signs of spring. On view from April 25 – June 10, 2018, there will be an opening reception for the artists on Saturday, April 28, from 5 – 7 p.m. All are invited to attend. Shawn Snow’s oil and alkyd paintings harness a sensuous vitality: his new work exhibits powerful restraint with cool, earthly hues and staccato brushstrokes that call to mind heavy rain or surging rivers. The highly excited states of the imagery as observed in the natural world are described by the artist as “beautiful and ominous; dynamic and crashing visually”. The surface texture of the canvas is both smooth and glassy, achieving a depth that suggests an infinite number of layers of oil and alkyd glaze. Gary Buckendorf’s stormy charcoal drawings are referred to as the “Olivebridge Drawings” referencing the town where he keeps his studio in the Catskills. The series has evolved over three decades following the artist’s move from Manhattan to Upstate New York. Each sheet of paper is distressed, showing age and evolution. Teeming with a dark, vibrating energy, the bold gestural marks in charcoal black, white and gray dare to burst outside of its pristine white shadow box frame. Ragellah Rourke’s painting on canvas and panel harmoniously combine grace and chaos in equal measure. With surfaces that are built up over time, the surface holds the memory of the painting’s development. Transparent, watery washes of paint are applied over surfaces, the ebb and flow of time and medium exposing marks and textures that unify to create the overall sense of balance. In contrast, the atmospheric, color field-style works of Bruce Murphy’s and Vince Vella burgeon with hushed turbulence. Layers of wax enrich the vibrantly colorful surfaces of Murphy’s small panels. Vella works with oil pastel to capture the many horizon lines where land meets mountain and sea. Carrie Haddad Gallery donates fifty percent of proceeds from the sale of Vella’s work to charity. Anne Francey’s observation of the natural world has always been the point of departure in her work, evolving into a constant oscillation between representation and abstraction, organic shapes and geometric order, what’s being shown and what’s being hidden. Whether starting from a flower, a twig, an insect or a moss; Francey simplifies and flattens their shapes, blurring their visual identity to reveal a hidden meaning. On view will be painting on paper and canvas, as well as a selection of ceramic wall sculpture. Encaustic artist and arborist Allyson Levy combines natural materials with wax in attempts to capture human-animal interaction with nature. Her botanical garden in Stone Ridge, NY offers a wellspring of inspiration for her work, which involves suspending carefully arranged seeds, insects and flora in clear beeswax. Her work communicates Levy’s augmented concern for the fate of the natural world, as the seeds are quite literally preserved by the wax for future generations.

PAINTED CITIES at Carrie Haddad Gallery
On view January 4, 2018 through February 18, 2018
Hudson locals and New York City natives will find common ground at Carrie Haddad Gallery this January, as it hosts a trove of familiar sights in its upcoming exhibition Painted Cities, which will include works by Dan Rupe, Darshan Russell, Edward Avedisian, Patty Neal, Richard Britell, Robert Goldstrom, and Scott Nelson Foster. Featuring everything from paintings of the Empire State Building and Hudson Library to corner laundromats and takeout restaurants, this exhibition forms a compelling human portrait without calling upon the human figure. Crafted in an array of styles, from a Fauvist inspiration to hyperrealism, each cityscape captures a city’s character with an intense precision and sensitivity to the world people build for themselves.
Meanwhile, the human presence lies in the artistry of each painter’s brush. Richard Britell captures vignettes of classical-style architecture unique to New York City in a hyperrealist depiction. Cityscape painter, Patty Neal, also uses Manhattan as her muse but rather focuses on the juxtaposition of nature’s persistent force within the developed world. After residing in Brooklyn for many years, local landmarks like the Williamsburg Savings Bank and the skyline on the East River became mainstays in Robert Goldstrom’s work. While the artist continues to examine these subjects at various times of day, each is brought into a new context with changes in light and perspective.
Part of the exhibit will shift its focus closer to home to upstate cities like Hudson, Albany, and Poughkeepsie. Dan Rupe transports us into his world of expressionistic color with scenes from the artist’s studio that capture the streets of Hudson with Fauvist style brushwork. Following a monumental shift from painting eye-popping Color Field paintings of grand scale in the 1960s, Edward Avedisian retained an affinity for flat shapes and bright color in Livingston Avenue, a 24 x 30 inch winter scene set on the slushy sidewalks of an offbeat neighborhood in downtown Albany circ. late 1990s. Scott Nelson Foster’s delicately detailed grayscale watercolors of empty storefronts and townhouses share a nostalgic narrative and examine the artist’s definition of beauty found in “absence and loss, not presence”. Monochromatic city vignettes devoid of human activity call to mind the dwindling presence of small town, USA. Self-taught artist, Darshan Russell, paints scenes from the Poughkeepsie Journal in her signature naïve style. Familiar city scenes are enlivened with her bold use of opaque color, applied to the canvas straight from the tube.

Galerie Gris

Galerie Gris is pleased to announce a solo exhibition of new paintings by Susan Wanklyn. The works range in size from 34 x 36 inches to 9 x 12 inches and are casein on wood panel, included are a series of gouache and casein drawings on paper titled ‘Plant Life’. In this body of work that Wanklyn refers to as “Cookie Cutter” paintings, the spontaneous, the casual, and the ephemeral of finding such ‘ready made’ shapes (sometimes inspired by appliquéd fabric and clothing) inhabit a spirited world of nonobjective charm. Within these intuitive compositions there is an adept placement of forms, sometimes the shapes behave as space, sometimes as things. The shapes are freed from the ground and placed so that they have a definitive relationship to the space around them. With color and tonality the shapes always find their own space, demanding a separateness while maintaining a focus on the relationship between shape, form and color. In these paintings Wanklyn creates space for the imagination, clearly eluding a distinctive narrative. The idea of painting as a means to an emotional and spiritual end with subtle fluctuation between the meditative, decorative and familial resemblances creates lyrical work of visual serenity, joyful paintings.

Inspired by technological imagery of his home town, Livorno, Breschi layers matte acrylic paints to resemble polished chrome, creating gleaming tubes that course between canvases like elaborate mechanical systems. In a more representational selection of work, traditionally bulky, rectangular robots appear surprisingly domestic.
He has exhibited in Italy, France, Spain, Germany, Switzerland, Greece, and the United States. His 25-foot metal sculpture, Grande V was installed in Piazza della Victoria, Livorno in August, 2017.

Walnut Hill Fine Arts
Providence X Hudson: Prevailing Mysteries
curated by Manya K. Rubinstein
For much of its recorded history, the city of Hudson has been visited—and shaped—by outsiders. Artists have long been drawn to the natural beauty of its surrounding landscape. In recent years, more than a few artists with ties to Providence, Rhode Island (itself no slouch in the creative department) have decided to make Hudson their home. This show presents a selection of work by four women artists who currently reside in the Providence area and are part of a continuing exchange of people, art, friends and ideas that flow between New England and the Hudson Valley.
The artists represented here work in different mediums but each, to varying degrees, touch on issues of mysticism, order versus chaos, and our relationship to the natural world. In a time of political and climatic upheaval, they ask us to examine how we choose to think and how much we allow ourselves to feel. Where do we draw the lines between ourselves and our environments, constructed and natural? How do we make sense of chaos in the world at large or even within our own psyche?
Theresa Ganz’s ornate reimagined landscapes (created through delicate layering of photographic source material) point to the thin lines between documentation and invention, yielding an unending dance between the natural and artificial. She calls up a 19th-century romanticism and idea of women’s work in a format that is a distinctly 21st-century take on truth and representation.
Jungil Hong, known for her psychedelic silkscreens and paintings, here uses woven textiles to look at how people, places, and things become markings as we move through time. The pieces were created on a Jacquard Loom, one is a “secondary sonic tapestry,” a term Hong invented to describe the process of recording the sounds of the loom, converting them into binary code, then feeding the sounds via a punch card back through the loom to create the final weaving.
Tayo Heuser’s childhood, spent in North, East and West Africa, heavily influenced her visual motifs. Her process to prepare her canvases is exacting and yields beautiful results: hand-burnished, unique surfaces on which she paints and draws, layer upon layer. Her gestural lines recall energetic fields surrounding living beings, and hint at underlying structures and forms of natural phenomenon that we may not be able to see with the naked eye.
Rachel Hulin, a writer as well as a fine art photographer, creates work that elevates the quotidian into the sublime, taking the minutia of the domestic and the everyday and translating them via a formal visual language of light, color and form into something deep and profound.
Each artist uses the idea of translation to create patterns and structures by which we may begin to order, process, or at least approach what remains expansive and unknown. Yet ultimately, there is much that escapes these attempts; perhaps it is inevitable that some mystery still prevails.

Galerie Gris / Cynthia Carlson
Galerie Gris is pleased to announce a solo exhibition of new work by Cynthia Carlson. Inspired by Roman baroque ceiling paintings and their illusionistic possibilities, these new paintings maintain a formalistic approach where the more structured, more pictorial side of the work meets the more chaotic and eccentric. The individual paintings are shaped canvases constructed of multiple canvases assembled to create one unified piece. Each has their own motif or symbol, but also functions as part of the larger image. These irregular shaped canvases sometimes form negative spaces, a ‘keyhole’ shape, which makes the exterior edges respond to the energetic rhythms of elements pictured within and also questions the boundaries between painting and sculpture. The color is both physical and ephemeral creating a playful exuberance in these canvases that seem to evolve into shaped rectangular archipelagos or clusters intersecting with unknown consequences.

FRG Gallery / COMING SOON!
HALABURDA
CONTEMPORARY PAINTINGS ON CARDBOARD
FRG OBJECTS & DESIGN / ART
OPENING RECEPTION AUGUST 5 2017
5:30 – 8:30 pm
Philippe Halaburda’s highly unusual body of work is inspired by his 2015 move to New York City, when he made the daring decision to paint on cardboard, a material easily acquired in the streets of Brooklyn. Flattened packages, tubes used for carpet or fabrics, and even cereal boxes provided an exciting deviation from traditional shapes and canvas surfaces and increased the urban narrative of Halaburda’s work.
The works on cardboard seem to channel the metropolitan energy of New York. Applying the language of abstract expressionism has created intense, emotional paintings while retaining a fierce sense of identity and independence. With each painting, Halaburda embarks on an improvisational journey, the outcome being vivid, rhythmic compositions of geometric shapes and staccato brushstrokes, always spontaneous yet precisely executed. Halaburda’s palette reflects the psychological state imposed by his environment.
It comes as no surprise that an artist with global influence would attribute such significance to the relationship between location and psyche. Halaburda has exhibited work in the United States, Canada, Europe (France, Italy, Spain, Germany, Austria, Belgium), and Australia. Halaburda’s work is also in the collection of many institutions such as the Radar (Bayeux, France), Draguignan Permanent Art Collection (Draguignan, France), and the Villa Baulieu Art Collection (Aix-en-Provence, France). It is also in private collections in the United States, France, Belgium, Spain, Italy, Switzerland, Canada, the Netherlands, and China.

G. Leibovitz Restoration
For this latest post, I have a cherry Fall Front Desk constructed locally here in Columbia County, NY (or possibly Albany) sometime during the first half of the 19th century. The fall front is inlaid with the initials CDLM, which refer to the Delameter family, whose descendants still reside in the area.

OPENING RECEPTION APRIL 1 2017 5:30 – 8:30
untitled I, acrylic on panel, 48 x 96 in.
John Fallon created abstract paintings from a constructivist point of view with a linear focus utilizing color and symmetry, while exploring spatial illusion in his large scale canvases and modular pieces.
Having painted for the last thirty-five years in a variety of styles and mediums, the artist's current technique manipulates acrylic, spray techniques, watercolor, and inks to explore pattern, texture and surface. Fallon works in a dynamic fashion where form becomes less predictable and the process takes on a life of its own. The paintings, though appearing contrived, are more about the process than the end result. To quote the artist, "I think of painting as a seductive performance that keeps me coming back for more."
Prophecy, 2016, acrylic on panel, 48 x 96 in.

Why not mix it up?
We are pleased to offer an eclectic mix of Modern and Contemporary fine art and design alongside works from the Aesthetic movement in our upcoming Friday evening auction. We hope this juxtaposition of styles will encourage new ways of thinking about how art, furniture and objects can be combined to create interesting interiors, as well as furthering our curiosity about artists, makers and the works they create.
Not in town this Friday? No problem! Bidding can be done by absentee bid or online via Invaluable.com or Bidsquare.com. Please see our website for a fully illustrated catalogue and our bid form!

One of the Feng Shui mirrors from my designs.
This mirror has a distressed gold leaf finish with the Chinese character of Love carved in it and then painted black.
The idea behind this is that the auspicious attribute of "Love" will be reflected on the room, to the person looking into the mirror and will also carry forth in your life.
