Hitchcock & Eve has been created with several things in mind.
First, we want to provide an environment where artistic production is looked at within historical, cultural, and ideological contexts, where the life and ideas of a culture or individual are seen as a significant component of what we respond to and appreciate in a work of art.
Second, we want through bringing several traditions under a single roof to draw attention to the connections between those traditions, and to look at the value of an aesthetic object as an instance of a philosophy or mindset that may at first be unfamiliar to the viewer. Our hope is that we can in some way participate in the ongoing transformation of art history from a listing of teachers and students, names and styles, to a description of cosmologies and observations, traditions and revolutions, that consitute a visual analogue to the written history of human consciousness.
Third, we want to provide a place where people can share the ideas works of art elicit within them, where people can can stop for a few minutes or hours and find like minded individuals who share their enthusiasm, where ideas are freely offered and opinions argued. An extensive library is part of what we are developing for the gallery, and we plan to make this accessible to anyone with an interest.
Finally, as a gallery committed to education and discovery, we hope through our shows, catalogues, and scholoraship, and through our affiliations with artist and non-profits, to help others in their quest for understanding, and to play some small part in challenging the way we consider works of art or artists, accepting a role gallerists have taken on for centuries, namely the responsibility to shape art history, rather than simply to profit from it. Though we are a commercial enterprise, Hitchcock & Eve is first and foremost a place where the work of others is appreciated for the contributions those efforts make to all our lives. As writers and political scientists, artists and neighbors, we hope that the little corner we are carving out in Hudson, New York will prove a haven and a canvas, a vantage point and a mouthpiece, for the thoughtful or just the curious for years to come.
